Death of Evidence Rally in Guelph – Tuesday, July 10th at 12 noon at Old City Hall on Carden St.

July 9th, 2012

No science, no evidence, no truth, no democracy!

Science in Canada is under assault. This rally coincides with the large scientific conference taking place in Ottawa. There will be a Death of Evidence Rally in Ottawa as well organized by the Council of Canadians and many other organizations. The aim of these events is to stand in solidarity against the assaults on the collection and use of evidence as a basis for public policy. These assaults include the closure of research facilities, muzzling of public servants including government scientists and continuing reductions in funding and infrastructure support for research in the broader public interest.

Everyone is welcome! Wear your lab coat, dress in black or wear a black armband . . . or just come. Feel free to bring signs and/or other scientific or medical equipment. We will have a mock funeral for the untimely death of scientific evidence in our country.
With the timing of this demonstration in conjunction with the conference, we hope the media will cover the information about this loss of our water protections, our biodiversity, our future, etc. Please join us.

Examples of concern: the federal government has eliminated or severely cut many freshwater protection and other critical data collecting programmes in Canada. It has also drastically altered protective legislation in these areas that leave our society very vulnerable to increasing pollution and climatic instability. Deeply affected are those below among many others.

The Action Plan on Clean Water

The Chemicals Management Plan

The Contaminated  Sites Action Plan

The Arctic Water and Air Monitoring Programme

The B.C Coastal Waters Conservation Project

The Navigable Waters Protection Act

The Urban Wastewater Research Programme

The Integrated Monitoring of Water and Air Quality Programme

The Fisheries Act  Habitat Protection

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Act

The Global Freshwater Environment Monitoring Programme.

The Canadian Environmental Network

The National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy
The Canadian Nuclear Safely Commission
Statistics Canada

The First Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology ( aka Evolution 2012) in Ottawa July 6-10
This landmark event will bring together five of the world’s largest academic societies devoted to the study of ecology and evolutionary biology: the American Society of Naturalists (ASN), the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution (CSEE) the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB), the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE), and the Society of Systematic Biologists (SSB).  This will be the first time that these five societies have met together, creating a truly international event that spans the fields of ecology and evolution. It will be the premier showcase in 2012 for the presentation and discussion among peers of the latest, leading-edge research in ecology and evolution, and will also be an important forum for outreach and education.
